Building up subwoofer enclosures for your own car is now no problem. Just follow some simple steps and you are done. The thing that makes this whole procedure fun is that you can experiment with different sizes and shapes of enclosures while keeping the size of your subwoofer in mind. It can be as big as you want but that might take up the entire space in your trunk. First deciding by what kind of subwoofer enclosure you prefer it can either be ported or sealed. Sealed enclosures are simply air tight to stop any air to get in or get out while ported enclosures are a bit hard to make but their result is better than sealed boxes.

The few basic tools needed for building your own enclosure are electric drill with screws, medium density fiberboard, carpenter’s glue, jigsaw, Silicon caulk, sandpaper, metal screws, drywall screws and terminal cup for the speakers. By keeping in mind the size of your subwoofers and the space available in the back of the trunk decide a size and shape of the enclosure to go perfectly inside your trunk. With a help of a pencil and measuring tape draw the pattern on the fiberboard. The length, width and depth of the enclosure will vary from person to person according to the subwoofer itself. Just to get you started and give a wild idea the measurement of a rectangular box Height: 13″, Width: 14″ and Depth: 12″ while for a wedged box Height: 14″, Width: 18″ and Depth either 5” or 8”.

You will need to place the divider in the middle of the box to separate both of the subwoofers. Using a jigsaw cut the board and the inner circle to rest the speaker. Use a filer to smooth the cut edges of the board and a sandpaper to smooth the inner circle. The side panels will have almost 2” circle holes for the wires to pass through them. Use screws to fix the fiberboard in the shape of a box while using silicon to air tight it in the case of sealed enclosure. Glue the carpet to the top panel where the speakers will be popping out. Screw the connectors and air tight them with silicon as well. Then connect the positive and negative terminal to the speaker wires respectively. Once the sub is in the box and placed properly tighten it up with metal screws and place it in the trunk.
