Hi, We are a taxi company Hummingbird Cars in London. We provide Airport Transfer service from all london airports. We have recently started our new business and we require to buy Car navigation system or Tom Toms for our taxis. Can anyone suggest which type of navigation system and company is the best and where we can get the best deals. Thank you

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS. Satellite navigation dates back a lot longer than many people realize. The principles behind SatNav were first tested back in 1967, but it took nearly 30 years before the NavStar GPS System first began operation as a military application in the mid 1990s. Civilian use of GPS navigation was made available soon after the military launch, but the initial costs of using the system were very high, and required ongoing subscriptions to be paid. The first people who took advantage of GPS were pilots, and surveyors, who needed to be able to measure distances with pinpoint accuracy. In the early days , an affordable GPS auto navigation system was out of reach for the average car owner.

I just purchaed a 2008 Pontiac G6 (dealer-used) coupe last July for about 24,000 (only had 4,800 miles on it) after trading in my 2004 Buick LeSabre. I do like the design of it and after reading that it’s actually produced out of Ohio, I was definitely going to purchase it (because of the “Euro” look, but made in the states) The one thing that caught my eye when I first stepped into it was that it included this very model of nav system. Initially I was really intimidated with it because i never had a navigation system in it, so I read up on it the weekend before I were to pick it up and was absolutely floored with what it was capable of doing. Voice recognition and the ability to actually analyze one’s driving patterns to the point that it announces when a traffic light is coming up (a heads up to slow down) and the ability to input where you’re going, what stops you want to make, and time limits between each stop. With the nav’s ability to curtail your trip to your liking, it actually hunts down potential stops along the way to make your drive much easier. I also like the big-capacity hard drive installed: Giving the user 10 gigs of drive space to put in whatever music he/she likes to listen to is an addition that’s beyond the scope of using CDs. They even go to so far as to tag each tune for you in advance. That’s so cool! It beats having to tag each file during one’s spare time. That could be a drag and time-consuming. Needless to say, I love my AVIC. It makes me wonder how I ever lived without a navigation system in the 1st place.

Anthony, while starting your car turn your parking lights on and off in 3 second increments until the unit has reached the menu screen and it will work fine. Make sure the parking brake is off while doing this or it won’t work. EBAY has some modules that you can purchase for around $35 bucks if you want to go all out.

I bought the Avic Z2 about a month ago. Its really nice. But I didnt know you cant watch DVD movies or input navigation WHILE VEHICLE is in MOTION The Avic Z2 locks you out from doing any of these while your driving.

One of the best GPS System i have ever used the screen is clear, nav is easy all the attachments connect great. everything about this unit is awesome. Only thing that is kind of a pain is the touch screen doesnt react sometimes i think i just need to get used to it!
